I just remembered that my manual was in my truck. This is what it said on page 92… Up Shift
1st – 2nd 15
2nd – 3rd 25
3rd – 4th 35
4th – 5th 45
This sounds very conservative to me. I guess a happy medium would be somewhere between what you posted and what I found on page 92. My numbers would be the low end and yours would be the high end.
for a bike that's broken in - these numbers are low.
my experience with the 5 speed is that for your around town stuff - 3rd gear is your friend. I try to get into 3rd by 30mph if I'm just taking it easy - and then I can leave it there for a good long time - even up to 70! But as mentioned - it really depends on your riding style - or your mood of the day - sometimes I'm in 4th gear when running at 50mph - just putting along - but most times I like to be smack in the middle of the powerband and I wouldn't even consider shifting into 4th until at least 55mph.
So - your guess at a "happy medium" is a good one.

What the heck? No kidding? Man, my engine is all wound up if I'm not out of 3rd gear by at least 40mph. I do have a tach, but to be honest with ya, I never even look at it. This is pretty new to me, but I've driven manual shift toys for years and always just do it by ear. Maybe I'm shifting too early? Seems like that could be the case.
hey guy, remember, everybody has been there and done that. Its not a stupid question at all. I have an 04 wideglide and it took a little while but, personally I shift outta first around 12-15 mph. After that I just listen to the engine. Never be afraid to ask. The folks in this forum are the best and are always willing too help.[sm=deal.gif]
