Default Speed/RPM question

Well I just have no idea how many rpm's I'm turning
in specific gears and speeds since I have no tachometer.

I've got a new 05 Fat Boy with the standard motor and trans.
I had stage 1 done, but I doubt that that fact makes any difference
with regard to these questions.

Based on the owners manual, I'm shifting at the following
speeds (approximately) and just assuming that these shift points will keep it
under 3000 rpms as required during the break-in period.
I really have no idea what the rpms are at these speeds
but I'm assuming they are at around 3000 rpms just prior to shifting.

Is this a reasonable assumption?

15 mph shift to 2nd
25 mph shift to 3rd
35 mph shift to 4th
45 mph shift to 5th

Now heres another question:

Can someone reply with a list of how fast (mph) I can take each gear safely
once I'm past the break-in period?
Since I have no tach I just dont know where that red line is....

If you're following the manual you'll be fine shifting at those speeds. Once it's broken in you can rev it as high as the rev limiter allows. It'll start breaking up. or stuttering, when the rev limiter cuts in. You'll probably back off before it starts cutting out, as it sounds like a bunch rocks in a tin can flying around.

Like Skip says, the rev limiter will protect you if you get that high. I don't worry about it; I just shift when the bike tells me to, depending on how hard I'm riding, traffic and road conditions etc. I do sometimes ride fairly hard, but don't drag race and I haven't hit the limiter yet. With normal riding, I don't get anywhere near it.

It would be nice to have a tach, though.

Cheers

I've wound mine out pretty far and have yet to hit the limiter. I've been thinking about adding a tach just cuz...

While it's breaking in would it be bad to shift to second at 20mph? What about taking it up to 30mph in first gear? Is that bad during break-in? It shifts a lot smoother to second gear at 20mph vs 15mph.
