Default Shifting RPM

Just bought a 98 Fatboy, 1340cc, and I have a rookie question. The manual says to shift at 15, 25, 35, and 45. Is this right? I don't have a tack but that is not where my instincts tell me to shift. It sure seems a little early.

I don't really know, I just sort of feel it when it's time to shift.

That is a good question............I imagine those are the minimum speeds to shift at. I have a tach and I hit those speeds at about 1800 rpm, more or less, and it seems to early to shift to me as well.

In fact, everyone cautions against lugging the engines because it is hard on the crankshaft, but I wonder what rpm that is? Of course, different conditions will yield different results, etc. I feel that any rpm below 2000 is too low. What do some of the other guys thinK?

I agree that lugging the engine is not good for it. I don't have a tach on my Heritage, I usually shift out of 1st at 25, out of 2nd at 35, out of 3rd at 47'ish, out of 4th around58-60 -- seems to work ok and the bike seems fine with it.

Change gears when it won't rev anymore, when you get used to it change gears just before the rev limit.

Other then that go with the feel of the bike, conditions and your mood.

There is no replacement for displacement

My Heritage shifts OK at the minimums but it's a good way to get rear ended on a quick moving roadway with some led foot behind you (especially the 1st to 2nd shift). I try shifting at the 20-25,30-35,40-45,50-55 marks. Its usually the traffic conditions that dictate my speeds.
