I was out yesterday and riding my 06 Street Boband on the way home the bike just died. Nothing on the dash indicators showed up and the power was on. I had lights and the bike cranked. When I got back to the house I started to check everything out, found nothing out of the ordinary. Called the dealership, they just got done working on the bike said it was not their fault and said they wanted 160.00 just to pick it up and deliver it to them.
So, knowing that I would not do that I tore into it some more and found only one think out of the ordinary. The battery was at 11.81V, I hooked up the charger to it and tried to jump it, nothing. Took the battery off and tried charging it, after sitting all night the charge was still 11.81V. I picked up another battery today to try, but fear that it could be something else. The bike only has 1000 miles on it so I cannot believe that there would be an electrical issue already.
11.8 volts is not enough to run the bike. That's why the fuel pump sounds quiet.
The new battery should get the bike started, but then you have to figure out if the battery was weak from 'old age' or you have a charging system problem.
You said the bike only has 1000 miles on it, total.
Sounds like it sits a lot. Do you keep a battery tender/charger on it?
No battery tender, I usually just start it every 3-4 weeks and run it. If that is the issue then I will be buying one this week. Last year I had a issue and could not ride, but now I am back. I assume it has to do with the fact it was out in the cold garage this winter. I was not out there heating it all the time because of oil prices this year.
I will keep my fingers crossed that the new battery will solve the problem. I don't think it is a charging issue since my charger could not even charge it.
Battery could of froze up.
Sounds likea Tender is in your future.
Look at it this way, it's cheap insurance for your new battery.
Be sure to hook up the quick connect cable, that comes with the Tenderwhen installing the new battery, then it'll be a plug and play deal from then on.
Good Luck.
Get your self a good quality AGM type battery and a tender for it. Try the hawker oddessy.
11.8v sounds like you have lost a cell in the battery. When you start the bike every 3-4 weeks how long do you run it for ? Staring the bike takes a lot oout of it and it takes a good 20-30 min run to bring the battery back up to full charge.
The HD service guy told me that it will start charging the battery once the RPMs go over 1800 (i think that was the number), so if you were letting it sit there only idling, then it might not have been charging at all. I just picked up the HD battery tender for like $35, since my bike already had the leads for it.
harbor freight has tenders for 8 bucks... works on all 4 of our bikes! just starting the bike only keeps the injectors from gumming up... will not keep the battery.
Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it makes me feel a bit better since the dealership I went to today, different from my normal one because it is closer to my work, had no clue.
My next purchase will certainly be a tender, figure it will be worth it no matter.
