The new washer does not have a tab. It is a plain washer, much thicker than that piece of beer can that was in there originally. Don't remember the torque value off hand. Will check tonight if no one responds with it. You can buy just the washer or the "kit". The "kit" comes with instructions/torque value -$3 more. I got the "kit" because conveniently for the Stealer that was all they had.

Chili ~ You can reproduce the clunk sitting on the bike with the engine off.

Roll backwards slowly and apply the front brake. That will decompress the forks a bit. Next roll the bike forward slowly and grab the front brake hard enough to make the forks compress. Basically, lock the front brake at a slow roll. You should hear the clunk as the forks dive.

I had to demo it for my dealership before they would believe me. They said they didn't hear any "clunking" on a test ride....

Everything I've heard about the bulletin (even from the service tech at the dealership) says it's a customer request issue. It is not a safety issue, so it didn't warrant a recall.

I was nice to my dealer and requested it along with my 10k service since they'd already have my bike on the lift.

So, I called my dealer today, and asked about it. Seeing as how mine's an '08 (beought August '07), and the Bulletin came out in Feb '08, they are ging to check it under warranty. They said they'll do the fall away check on it. Nice to still have that warranty going...

Will the fall away check determin if my bike needs this, or not?

I get the clunk when I hit a dip bump. And it does not happen every time.
My problem is that my bike is an 05 and not addressed in the bulletin.
I will call service to see what they say.

Just because your bike doesn't fall with in the years of the bikes listed in this "fix kit", don't think it is not possible to suffer from the same problem. Checking the torque of the steering head nut is part of scheduled maintenance. Re-torque the steering head nut and it should take care of the clunk.

dynaWG06 the steering nut torque (according to the "$3 instructions") is 70-80 ft-lbs.

I like the seat zippo. It goes well with the covered shocks.

So is doing the fall away check the correct way totroubleshoot this "clunking" issue?
