One of my spark plug wires is beginning to discolor on the cap and there is only 280 miles on the bike. Anybody out there have any idea why? That bothers me a little since I'm concerned that we're talking about something that may burn up if there is a true problem.
I BET IT IS NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT... WHAT COLOR ARE THEY TURNING. MINE WERE KIND OF WHITE-ISH, MAYBE FROM SOME WAX OR SUN, I DUNNO. BUT ANYWAY I JUST PUT A LITTLE LEATHER/VYNAL CLEANER ON THEM AND THEY WENT BACK TO BLACK. ALSO THERE IS A PRODUCT CALLED BACK TO BLACK THAT WOULD DO THE TRICK ALSO. JUST MAKE SURE IT IS SAFE FOR RUBBER!
I WORK WITH HYDRAULICS ALL DAY AND SOME OF OUR O-RINGS COME IN A LITTLE WHITE-ISH... I WAS TOLD THIS IS SOMETHING THEY PUT ON THEM TO KEEP THEM FROM STICKING TOGETHER. I DONT KNOW IF IT IS THE SAME STUFF BUT... JUST MAY BE!
I dont think it's anything to get upset about.
the easiest way I know to turn the insulators and wires white is to introduce water or even faster, salt water to them while the motor is running.
You havent been giving your ride swimming lessons, have you?
Naw, I'm almost 200 miles from the nearest salt water (boy do I really miss it too, raised on the ocean front and loved it!). I guess I won't worry for now as long as my left leg doesn't catch fire. [sm=thanx.gif]
What you may be seeing is a release spray that is used in the manufacturing,
It's almost like a waxy clear material that was not removed during assembly.
The release coating keeps parts from sticking in the mold when made and will
turn to a waxy powder coating where ever there is a sharp bend in the wire or
at the area of most vibes...rubber friendly cleaner will remove it..Hope this helped
