how do i know if my 69 has a magneto? i bought plug wires for one that did, so im sure it doesnt. i swear its never been so hard to find parts for anything before.
cant find them at j&p.
had someone go to my local shop(they close at 6 during the week, i work till 7). they took the old wires i had with them, and the guy was so worthless that even though he had the old wires in his hand, he gave me ones that are seemingly for a mid 80's bike...
This is an easy one 69....On the timing cover top is where the magneto sits. If you have a mag it will be this rather large box having a black bakelite top cover. If you have a circuit breaker instead of a mag, this sits in the same place atop the timing cover but it is going to be a round (probably chromed plated)...ah well,... circuit breaker.
If you have a magneto, the spark plug wires plug right into the black cap.
If you have a circuit breaker, then the plug wires plug into the coil which is mounted remotely.
welp, i think its a coil because the wires plug into something under the seat behind the battery. i wonder why j+p wouldnt have custom wires for that... time to buy my 3rd set of wires... as soon as i find a place to buy them....
That sounds like where the coil would be located on a circuit breaker Sportster.
I do not know why you are having such a time finding plug wires. Email Roeder Harley Davidson in Ohio and I bet they can fix you up.
I will check on that email address and get back to you with another post.
You can use automobile wires if you find some that plug into the coil rather than an automobile distributor that has pins sticking up. I might even have an old (but good) set of wires that I will give you. I will look and see......................piniongear
