I pickedmy kids up at school when they were about 10 years old, just 4neighborhood blocks away. When they got to about 12 I would take them out for longer, highway rides. By the way, always with a sissy bar. Hope that helps.

My son is almost 12 and I have started taking him on rides lately. My daughter is almost 7 and I will take her around the block and once in awhile pick her up at school (it's just couple of blocks from the house). I put the sissy bar on for them as well, and keep it under 20 mph with her on.

My daughter is 14 and won't be caught dead on my bike but then, she's at the age where she doesn't want to be caught dead with her parents period. She's ridden with me once for literally about a minute and a half. My son is 10 but started riding him when he was 9. But even though he's a daredevil, already on his 2nd Honda CRF dirtbike, "mommy" won't let him ride with me very far or very fast yet. Yet, she'll let me take him out to her brother's homemade motorcross track and let him jump hills. He wants me to pick him up from school one day so that his friends can see but I haven't done it. There will always be those parents that look down their nose at you because either, A - you must be trash because you are on a bike to start with or, B - how could you dare put your kid on the back of that death machine. Especially since my kids go to a private school (thanks to probably the worst public schools in the nation here) and most of the snobs out there think the only way to ride is in nothing less than or smaller than a Suburban or Escalade.

first of all I'm not a neglectful parent. I grew around bikes. I rode my son around basically sitting in my lap with his feet on the gas tank at about 2 years old. I didn't graduate him to the back seat until his helmet started hitting me in the chin on take off, which was probably about 8 or 9. But he has now grown up around bikes and they are the norm in our family. Most of the looks your gonna get are from those terrified of bikes. Or you just might have one bad looking scoot!!

Bought a little pink DOT helmet for my Godchild when she was 5 1/2. For the 1st year or so we just crept around the roads in her subdivision at no more than 20 MPH or so.
She just turned 7 and can finally reach the passenger pegs. Now we ride out on the road and she LOVES it!
Needless to say, I have never driven any vehicle more carefully than when my little angel is on the back.

As soon as they can reach the footpegs. But I also used a back rest for them.

I take my 6 yr old on little rides to the store or too pick him up from school. All of these are just short of a mile and in 25mph residential areas. His feet are flat on the pegs, he wears a DOT helmet that fits him properly and long pants. Gotta get them used to the safety gear early! He always wants to be picked up on the bike so his little friends can see him

I got my bike when she was 10, with in a couple of weeks she had her own helmet and we were riding around the base. She is 11 now, and I still do not like to take her out on the street to much, other than back roads and around the subdivision.

I have picked her up from school and what not a few times which is about12- 15 miles away.
