Installed a Sundowner seat today. Although it changes the look of the bike, the comfort factor is well worth it. Gives you a nice little cup, to put your butt in. On the stock seat without the sissy bar, give it a little to much gas and you were off the seat. It feels like I'm sitting about 3/4" higher than I was before. Feet still touch the ground, but not as flat as the stock seat. (I'm 5' 8"). Still debating about forward controls. The mids are comfortable to me, but I wonder on a long ride if the forwards are worth the cost.
Get some highway pegs for the long distance. If you feel comfy with the mids, just leave them. This option gives you different foot placements for longer distances.
I had a sundowner but it seemed to push me a bit forward so I was able to arrange a trade for a Tallboy, which is essentially the same seat except the Tallboy pulls you back over an inch. At 6'4", I needed that even with forward controls. They are comfortable seats but HATE it on my bike. Looks are one thing but, as you point out, it also raises you up significantly and it just doesn't feel right to me. However, on long rides or with the wife on the back, there is no substitute.

RE: Sundowner seat
Hmmmmm, they call it the Sundowner Deep Bucket but you're saying it raised you up higher? I've been looking for one to try on my '06 DWG, hoping for a bit lower/forward position. I'm 5'9" and the Forwards were almost a stretch with the stock seat. Picked up a Reach thru ebay and it definitely moves ya forward, almost to the point of resting your "boys" on the gas tank. But the Reach offers no benefits to a passenger, so I want to try a Sundowner. Just received a Street Bob stock solo (again, ebay) on the front porch yesterday afternoon...haven't had a chance to try it out or figure out how I'll configure the rest of the tail-end (sissy, rack, etc.) with the SB seat mounted. Already have a picture in my head of a wall in the garage with hooks screwed into the studs and 4-5 optional seats all hanging in a row, with 4-5 optional sissy bars/pads on hooks below them!
pkelly, you can probably pick out your "rack", as you call it, based on the style you like. But, seats, unfortunately, sometimes take some weeding out. It's too bad most of us have no way to try out seats before we buy them. I still have 3 myself and I've bought and sold or traded 2 others. So, what you describe is likely not uncommon.
The Sundowner does lift you up simply because it has a lot more padding in the seat. However, for me it acted much like a reach seat. I've never sat on a reach seat so I can't compare but it definitely felt like it pushed me forward. So much so that my legs felt cramped even with forward controls. So, it had to go. I got lucky and found someone with a Tallboy seat that was willing to do a straight trade for a Sundowner.
Keep in mind, too, that there is a HDForums sponsor, Mean City Cycles, located right here in the great ole state of NC that can take any seat you have and reshape it for you. And their prices are very reasonable, especially when compared to buying a whole new seat.
+++ for the Sundowner. Add some highway pegs and enjoy the long rides!! The wife also appreciates the comfort of the Sundowner versus the stock seat while riding on the back.
Iâm 5-10 with a 30â inseam and my Solo Sundowner was to tall for
me and my 07 SB. So I had it cut down and memory foam added
to fit my needs. Iâm not crazy about the looks but it sire is comfy. http://www.putfile.com/album/109493

+1 I like mid controls and with hi-way pegs you can reposition your feet and relax a little. I've heard of some putting on forward controls and installing mid pegs for foot fatigue. I like my sundowner for 2 up, but I enjoy the stock solo also.

I agree. I've seen one place in Clarksville, TN that had a frame, looks like a exercise bike, set up where you could try different handle bars and seats. However it was limited on the number of seat and bars they had on hand.
