I had the dealer put the new washer in under warranty. I still heard a clunk. I jacked up the bike and gave the front wheel a spin and hit the front brake. It's the floating disk. Both directions clunked when the front brake was applied. There was no way it could be the steering stem with the bike jacked up like that. I am satisfied with what I hear now unless someone knows how to stop the rotor from clunking like that.
just ordered my $1.83 washer from the dealer today. i'm kind of surprised that it wasn't in stock (and they never had them there either). figured that this is a long island dealership and they must have moved tons of these problematic clunkers... oh well, they printed out the instructions for me and will call when it comes in.
DynaDan I agree just tighting up the nut is not the correct way to do it. I finally got out the repair manual just to see how it went together. I just loosend the big nutthen found I was able to slip a long skinny punch I have in between the steel and aluminum where you can see the teeth [bearing cup] that tightens the bearing down. Moved it about 1/4" went out a tested came back and moved another 1/8" and it is totally gone and brought the big nut torque back to specs.
This still is not quite the correct way but it works without tearing everything down. I was also at my dealer today and asked the parts man about the thicker washer deal and he said he has never heard of it. He's been behind the counter for 25 years so its not like he's a newbe. But I do know there are better dealers out there.
That's the way to go. I just loosened the upper clamps a little so I could get my screwdriver in there. I'm not suprised your parts guy had not heard of it. Two of the local dealers I asked about it here had not heard anything about it. Just give them the service bulletin number and they can look it up on the Harley net. They will probably have to order the washer. For some reason none of them have it in stock. You would think they would have a few since this is a known issue on not only the Dynas, but the Softails too.
