I called a local hd dealer to see they would replace my mid glide trees with wide glide. They said they can do and estimated 3 hours of labor @ $80/hr. 3 hours seems conservative. I was thinking closer to 5 since that they have to disconnect the wires running through the upper tree. What do you guys think?
But thats not a bad price if you dont want to mess with it
truer words where never spoke!!! take it to a local indy shop! have them do it if you are not comfortable... their are a ton of people that know bikes in every area... just cause they do not work at a dealership does not make them less qualified... hunt around... or give it a go yourself... just take your time and follow the book... plus with this forum you cna do ANYTHING
I would love to do it myself but I do not feel comfortable messing with the wiring.
what is there to worry about the wiring? all you do is pull it out of the neck then unplug it, they have quick release plug ends. you might have to pull your plastic trap door under the neck to untangle the wires, so you can pull it out of the neck hole. then re-route the wire, and plug it back in, then pushthe wiringback into the neck. you dont haveto cut the wiring or nothing like that. about 5-10 minutes of work.
+1 what Jackyl said. Go to the 50 bux mods thread " at a sticky top of page". Mud did a write up on the connectors pics and everything. Dude you CAN do this. I switched out bars and tank with the service manual and a thread write up.
Smiley
the other question is. before you have it done or do it yourself. you better have all your parts you need first. if not the dealer qoute will be much much much higher, after you drop your bike off, thats the catch..couple questions to ask yourself
1. are you using stock mid-glide fender? (then you will need spacers). if not you will need a wdg fender or go fenderless
2. are you using your stock mid-glide lower sliders? if not you will need spacers for the aligning of your caliper to your rotor. or you can go with wdg lower sliders, then you will need a seal kit to install the slider on the fork and fork oil.
3. are you going with a 21 inch wheel? if so you will need wdg wheel spacers and bearing install kit. or are you wanting to stay with the 19? then you will have to get a wdg hub and have your 19inch rim relaced with the wdg hub.
I am planning to go fenderless at first andI plan to keep my stock fork sliders. I will need to confirm with hogpro, but they will build my wheel with a midglide or wide glide hub and spacers. They also mount the rotor, so I am guessing that the caliper will not need spacers since the hub is wideglide. The wheel should bolt right up I think.
I work at a dealership and even I agree with what is being said above. Buy a manual and do it yourself along with the help of this forum, or take it to a lower priced indy shop. Those guys know their stuff otherwise they wouldn't be able to make a living off of it right? I know for one thing if we quoted a lesser time here at the shop the service manager would come up with some bull **** response about how something wasn't figured into the quote and they didn't feel the need to call you to tell the price change because of the longer time it took. I'm not gonna lie harley shops **** me off sometimes even though I work at one. My 2 cents.
