You can go with a digital speedo and mount. I installed the 03 and up Sportster Custom riser. Got the whole set up off Ebay from a wrecked one for a lot less that buying from the dealer. I made the whole change in one afternoon so it was plug and play. The stock handlebar wiring was a bit short for this setup but it did work. In the future when I have time I'll lengthen the wires and go internal on the bars. The bars are a bit higher than stock and my riding position improved. Once you go the Sportster way the only way to change ride height is with new bars- there is no way to change the riser. There is plenty of clearance with the stock tank but there is not enough room for any tank lifts.

How did you wire it up? did you cut and splice the wires, or did you use a Sporty wire harness?
The Sporty Custom riser/gauge housinglooks good, and your stock gauge will fit in it. I think that's a good option. There's a forum member with a good how-to, but I can't think of his name right now. I was gonna do something similar, but I ended up chroming it when I changed bars and am happy with that, especially with the windshield on. But the FXD speedo mount really is better for riding (more visible), even though it ain't as pretty. And sometimes better for riding is more important than prettier (that's what she said).
I thought the same thing too till I flipped it and the angle was all wrong. So I took it off and left it off, no speedo,no idiot lights just a bare clamp. Lost 5#'s by leaveing it off, besides I know how fast I'm going don't you? Dave...
What about the mileage? Or maybe you don't think thats nessacary?
Nope not necessary, I do 2 oil changes a year and service the trans and clutch every other time and figure its 5,000 on each change. What else do you need one for? Or do you need to impress someone on how little you ride?
It was all plug and play with the stock wiring but it was a bit tight. My setup came with the sporty wiring harness which had longer wires than the stock ones on my dyna but I did not feel like experimenting. The main connector to disconnect the stock wiring runs under the fuel tank and I did not feel likemessing with the tank. From the looks of it the sporty wiring would have worked. Otherwise with a little wiggling everything worked. The downside was the wires are meant to run down a channel between the risers so with the stock wiring I had to leave it hanging out the sides. Since the stock wiring is a bit tight and it is held with plastic connectors to the bars, you will need to detach them to get enough slack. Like I mentioned before I'll leave it that way until I make the wiring internal to the bars. The stock brake hose will work but you need to straighten out the metal connector to the master cylinder get a little slack. So far I have not done any cutting and splicing. The stock speedo fit with no problem. I like the position a lot better over stock. I wish this was a factory option but I guess they dont want the FX and XL lines to cross.

This is definitely nota cheap solution. But, Drag Specialties has $800 mirrors with a digital tach, speedo, and indicator light built into the glass. They are really cool. You can get rid of the whole instrument cluster with this.
