Default Primary Whine

Have an 05 WG with state one mods, I have 41000 miles and haven't had any issues until now. I hear the primary whine when reving and accelarating and deceling. I have just changed all fluids and it is still there. Do you think do to the amount of miles the chain tensioner is to tight. I looked last night at everything and it all looked good but I am not sure about the tension part, as the manual states 3/8-5/8 play and from the inspection cover you really can't check to see if it has that much play, where do you check the tension to the left of the chain tesnion or the right Any input would be great

I can't specifically help you, as my WG is an 01......but as far as a whine in your primary, that normally is a sign that your chain is too tight. A loose primary chain is better than a tight one...so I always err on that side..........

A tight chain can put undue pressure on your bearings.

Ed

Ok, I loosened the primary chain and it got worse, it is now chirping and clattering so I will tighten back up later and just keep adjusting until it sound normal. If there are any other suggestions would be appreciated

the top of the chain is what you deflect for adjustment, to tight can and will eat tensioner shoe, and cause premature wear on bearings and or seals.

It is not the primary chain, I think it is the cam chain tensioner, would this make a whine sound also?

If it's your cam chain tensioner, the noise would sound more like marbles, and would come from the other side of your scoot by the cam chest.

With the mileage which you have on your scoot, I would check out your cam shoes just in case, had mine removed at about the same mileage, they were worn over 1/2 way thru, and replaced them with gear driven cams to eliminate that problem.

I suggest you take a screw driver or stethescope if you have one, and try to zero in exactly where that noise is originating from.

Ed

1. for 100 bucks you can get an auto chain tensioner for primary.
2. the guys with new 6 speeds have been having a bearing wear on them prematurely causing whine maybe yours has worn after 41K. Cannot recall what the bearing is officially called.

bearing is inner primary bearing but that problem is mostly 2006 However at your mileage it could be a concern you need to get that chain adjusted correctly and the continue

I did the screw driver thing last night and it was coming from Cam case area and it was a whine, no marble sound, but I will do it again tonight with help as I can't rev the engine and do the screw driver test on primary side at the same time.
