Friggin EPA
Ive been busy lately reading up on the lean 06 mapping that HD sent the bikes out with due to the EPA regs and all. I will be doing SERT but i have a few questions that i did not find when i was searching.
The bike stock seems very lean. I removed my plugs to install my head bolt covers the other eve and when i did the plugs werent as nice as i would have hoped. The front plug was black, not tan, but at the same time it wasnt like it was so rich it was dripping either. The rear plug was very light gray, almost white. I know the rear bank runs hotter than the front does but i was still suprised at this much difference.
Also im in cold *** Maine as you may guess by my name, and i dont plan on riding the bike until this spring, BUT i have to get my fix every couple of weeks and go and stare at it in the garage. The othernight i fired it up to let it rumble for a few mins. After about 5 mins i was getting ready to shut the bike off and when i went over i noticed in the opening on my heatsheilds where the mid controls used to be, the pipe underneath was red hot. Is this caused by the lean condition that the bikes came from the factory programed with? I cant immaginge i cant let the bike idle for 5 mins with out the thing getting this hot, my XL1200 never did when warming it up. Also on the V-Rod development show that was on discovery a couple years back they showed the rods idleing for something like a half hour in an inclosed bunker to test it for "parade duty" as they called it.
The point im getting to is: IF i buy the SERT now, would it effect anything if i were to install it before i do pipes and intake, which im doing this spring, so that i dont run the bike this lean anymore. Id proably plan on programing it for pipes and an intake, as well as cutting the A/F from 14.5 to 14.1 as mentioned in another post.
Please anyone with input that may help post what you know!
Thanks,
Mainehd
