I am thinking about putting on ape hangers on my Superglide. I wanted to get some insight from those who have them or have drove a bike with them. Are they comfortable? Are they all for looks or do they have any functional purpose? Recommendations for what kind to go with or how high to go? I'm 6'3" with long arms and legs. I got the 3" extended forward controls and currently the stock handle bars. Thanks for all the insight!
I think you will like them. I recently bought a street bob, which has mini-apes. I figured that the first thing I would do is get rid of them, put on a set of 6" risers and a flattish bar on them. I used to have an FXDX with 6" risers and the stock bar, which I found very comfortable. After I bought the street bob, I found that I really like the mini apes. I'm 6'1" with pretty long arms and legs and they fit me really well.
I am running the stock mini apes (12 inch?) with 4 inch risers on my Street Bob. I have had this set up for about 6 months and find it very comfortable. One thing about the apes is that you can loosen the risers and alter the angle of the bars to get a lot more range of motion than on a shorter set of handlebars. I am running this setup for a little longer and then will probably go with a true 15 inch with short risers. Same geometrical setup, but better looking, and strudier in a full 1 1/4" bar. (necked down for risers and controls) In the past I rode a v twin with drag bars and they made my palms go numb. The rule of thumb I use is to make sure you are not pulling or pushing on the bars in order to maintain your riding position. If you can find a 'neutral' setup, it will be less fatiguing in the long run.
16in apes on my WG also tall 6'2" with long arms and legs. I absolutely love them much more comfortable than the stock minis. Also have the 3in ext. on my bike. Can ride all day now. See album for pics
Not a big fan of apes on dynas personally...but whatever floats yer boat. Got a buddy who's 6-2" and he's getting apes on his FLHRCI and they looked about the right size when we mocked them up. That sounds about the right size for you.
I run 18"s love the hell out of them. I've rode 11,000 miles with them so far. Before you buy anything do yourself a favor and sit on as many bikes that have them with differnet setups before you buy.
