Riding to work today in good old Atlanta traffic when the bike just died like the switch was cut off. It restarted with a touch, died again 2 more times and then started and ran OK all day. Each time it restarted it ran perfect with no missing or rough idling till it died again. I don't need this stuff in this traffic here!
Has anyone else had this happen? It is an 06 St. Bob with only SEll's as mods to the engine. I dropped it off at the Stealer's to have them check it out, but have little expectations of their finding anything.
I had the very same thing happen to me a couple weeks ago. Bike died a few times over about a 15 min period. Engine just cut out but electrical stayed on. Fired back up right after but kept happening a few times. Then I rode about another 200 miles with no repeats. Happened off and on the next few days. The replies I got mainly focused on fuel as being an issue but I syphoned out the gas, used seafoam to rid any moisture and put fresh back in and had it happen again a few days later.
Mine seemed to be electrical. I opened the seat and was adjusting the cables underneath and then the bike wouldnt even turn on. After pulling off the battery and battery box and straightening all my wires and connections, the problem went away and hasn't returned. I am addmittedly retarded when it comes to electrical but my best guess is that one of the cables (maybe from the ECM?) was grounding out on the two frame mounted grounds under the seat and that was causing the shut off. Again, since I cleaned up the wiring its been running strong since.
Looking back at it, I did seem to have a warning sign about a day or two before it started. My starter seemed weaker than normal but was still turning the bike over. Since the rerouting (or maybe just fixing the battery connections) the bike has had no issues. Hope this helps but either way keep me posted on what you find. I have a 2008 Street Bob with a Digital Guard Dawg, V&H straight shot slip ons, and IED's.
My 06 Bob was dying on me periodically. What was happening was it would just die as if the kill switch was pushed. Pulled over to the side of the road the first couple of times. If I cycled the kill switch, it would start back up even at speed. It is not cool on the highway and the engine dies. Was in the shop for warrenty work for the issue twice. The first time they upgraded the injectors, thinking that was the problem, it wasn't. The second time it went to the shop they actually did some troubleshooting and found that the turn signal module (TSM-Y) was bad. It was replaced and haven't had the problem since. Hope this helps.
Hmm, I have noticed that every now and then the security system activates (flashes twice) but will not go off when shaken. This would fit with a bad TSSM I would think. I'll keep that in mind should it happen again.
Two thoughts come to mind...if the electrical stays on, then it's not the battery. My positive battery lead had some corrosion, but once I filed/cleaned the lead I never had that happen again. Secondly, some low-tier gas places put 15% alcohol into thier gas to make it reach the correct level of octane. When a bit of that gets into your igniters, the engine will gasp/cut for the tiniest bit of a second, but enough to be felt and make you wonder what happened. The alcohol will collect near the bottom of the tank, so you will get many more misfires as your fuel gets lower. Use the best gas you can get and eventually it will go away as you replace/use the old, cruddy, gas.
Seems the Twinkies are having a lot of trouble with the electrical connectors. I've read a lot of posts that end up with loose or corroded batt terminals, or shorts to the frame. Haven't had a similar problem on my old '95 Evo chopper. What's up?
You might check the ignition switch, mine has died going down the hiway also. All I had to do was turn the switch off and back on and the engine started right up.
