So, after being licensed for just under a month, I finally got my poor little low rider out of theneighborhood and onto the freeway!! Drove 60 miles round trip from home to Saguaro lake and back.
You can rack up a lot of miles and little experience on the highway. You just don't start and stop very often and that's what you mainly need experience with. So practicing in parking lots is good and so is cruising residential neighborhoods. I would suggest you do one or both before you start a ride until you're riding regularly. It's not a bad idea to do it again at the end since then you get some practice while a bit fatigued. Unlike a car the goal isn't to arrive at the destination, but rather to simply enjoy the ride. So it's actually enjoyable to take the long way home.
Great Job Donna! I know you have been taking the neighborhood cruises with your husband *(and solo too) First time on the big slab! You two must look great on the 2 lows! Keep it safe,
Ride on girl,i wish my wife would learn to ride! Anyhow tight turns and driving in traffic are the way to gain experience. A bike does stop much much faster than a car so always check your rearview when some nimrod decides he has to stop for a donut at the last second. Advice is free and worth every penny! You are the master!!
Thanks for all the advice, and trust me, I'll take it!
Yesterday's ride included a few miles in town before and after the freeway, some freeway, and some twisties. Definitely learned the importance of stopping fast when I blew past a stopped school bus because I saw it too late... in town we have multiple traffic lanes, and the bus was blocked by someone else who also flew right past it. I tried to stop, but was not too successful.
We're taking a 200 or so mile trip today, and I will be Joe's passenger for this one...I'm not in too big of a hurry to solo everywhere.
She was pretty nervous, but I was the one that needed a beer with lunch when we got to the lake.[8D]
She's been doing a lot of local riding; starting, stopping andshifting constantly. I wanted her to get in fifth gear for a while and just get to enjoy cruising for once. Kind of a taste of what's to come.
We only did about six miles of freeway, then took the two lane back road up to the lake where there wasn't much traffic. She led and I followed.
Now it's back to the local stuff daily until the controls become second nature and she doesn't have to think about them.
