Question, I am going to change my derby cover off my 06 Bob. Need to know if I will need to change the gasket also. Rode numerous years before kids came along, now been back at it for a couple of years. Bikes have changed a lot in 30 years. The stock one is just a piece of stamped out chrome or stainless steel. Looking to upgrade it. Thinking about a Harley Flame (gold & silver) style. Need good advise in the mechanics of how to do this. Do not have a manual. Any good advise is welcome.
I've always been a bit of a belt and braces guy on this one - if it has a gasket andit getsdisturbedI would always replace it with a new one. Done this ever since I was kid wrenching my own engines and the like. Doesn't cost may more pennies and myOld Manalways said it was good practice.
the gasket costs about 8 bucks. i keep one on hand if i need it. usually if you are carefull you can reuse at least once. you will know if you dont get away with it...then change it..
If you replace the factory cover with an aftermarket one, then you're going to need to get a "sheet" style gasket. The factory "O-ring" style won't work on most aftermarket covers.

\\;If you have the miles on the bike why not change the fluidwhile the cover is off? Be very careful removing the Torx fasteners on the derby cover, especially if it's the first time they are coming out.
