Default Oil Expansion Ring

Does the position of the Oil Expansion ring matter when putting the piston back in the cylinder?&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\;I followed the instructions in the manual as far as where to position the top ring, second ring and the two oil rings...I didn't notice or catch the note about the oil expansion ring and now my bike is smoking (burning oil-blue smoke)?

Per spec, the expansion spring should not be lined up with the lower and upper oil rail rings. The oil expansion ring gap should have been located towards the intake valve which is the same location of the gap for the top compression ring. The two oil rail rings gaps should be at 1/4 opposing locations and opposite of each other. Is this a constant problem for you or is this at first start up because you might have residual oil but that should go away fairly quickly?

I'm thinking i didn't position the expansion ring correctly.&nbsp\\; Can this cause smoking?&nbsp\\; I've started the bike up several times and let it run in case it was residual oil that needed to burn off.&nbsp\\; The kicker is this bike only has 17,000 miles on it and after a 3 year lay off, its giving me problems.&nbsp\\; It started with having to replace a head gasket...

It seems like you have some multi-symptoms going on. Have you done a compression check? How do the plugs look? While it's nice to make sure the rings are in proper position, the one you have to worry the least about is the oil expansion ring. As long as the top and bottom oil rail rings are not lined up you should be okay there. Don't know what your year your bike is but having it lie around for 3 years isn't really healthy for it. Instead of nickle and diming yourself (more like heavy $ing yourself) you might want to get some professional diagnostics done.

Went ahead and tore the damn thing apart....I found oil on the top of the piston and in the intake manifold.&nbsp\\; I'm gonna just go ahead and go through it all again, I never did replace the umprella seal on the valves.&nbsp\\; I don't know if you caught any earlier posts but when i first started it, there was no oil burning just a leakey head gasket.&nbsp\\; When i replaced the head gasket, I drained the old oil (conventional) and&nbsp\\;I put in 3 qts of synthetic oil (i use to always run conventional until I moved out here to the devils oven of Texas-it was the first time i switched).&nbsp\\; After i started it, it was smoking, &nbsp\\;when i read the oil level, it read 1 qt too much.&nbsp\\; I drained it, it still smoked but much less.&nbsp\\; Its been all down hill since then.&nbsp\\; Seems like something is stopping me from hoppin on the highway on my bike.
