Ok so I just did my 1000 mile service all the fluids looked good except the primary fluid. It was black and there was metal shavings on the plug. Has anyone else had this experiance. Should I run her in to the dealer today?
Your primary (chain) oil was black with shavings?
 \\;
Let some of these other guys answer before getting all spun up but, that doesn't seem right to me. \\; My primary oil is always very clean, almost clear. \\; Metal shaving in a small amount are no big deal but black oil is strange. \\; Crank case oil is always black, but not primary.
 \\;
 \\;
How much shavings? \\; In the first few thousand miles I always had shavings, intially the amount was about the size of an eraser head, and very very fine.
 \\;
Also, the oil itself is usually fairly clear. \\; Assuming your shavings are fine and it was not a "HUGE" amount, I'd run it for another 500 miles or so and see what the color looks like. \\; Also, did it look black when in the container or in a little drop in your hand or on a piece of white paper? \\; I find everything looks darker when it is in the container. \\;
My engine oil always looks clear on the dipstick, and when draining I can see through it nicely, but it is fugging black in the milk jug I send to recycling.
 \\;
If it is black black black, you might want to take an oz or so down to the service manager and ask them what they think (assuming you trust your local SM... In my case I do)
mine was kind of black with a few shavings not much but this was at 2500 miles what oil did you put in there this time i used the rotella 1540 and am very happy with it
the fluid was much darker then the crank case oil. the shaving were very fine on the plug and it was covered. Also there where shavings in the collecter pan. I am taking her down to the dealer today. Thanks for the help.
 \\;
I don't think "shavings" are good... in my head that is something much bigger than the fine grit that gets caught by the magnet on the plug.
 \\;
Probably a good idea to take it down... hopefully you saved some of these shavings to show them.
 \\;
Don't be surprised when they say "that is normal". \\; Have them put it in writing that they say that.
 \\;
 \\;There is some "wearing in" in the first 1000 miles, new clutch plates going against the metal friction plates, new chain wearing on new sprockets. If I remember right the plug on my first change had some fuzz on it and the oil was a bit dark but not as black as the engine oil. To put your mind at ease, if you still have the oil drain it thru some cheesecloth and show your dealer. \\; \\; \\; \\;
I'm probably a little ****, but I always change the oil on a new vehicle after 50 miles and then 500, before I go to regularly scheduled maintenance, I had a little metal paste around primary drain plug and a few very small shavings at 50(I took primary cover off to get them all), paste only at 500, and pretty clean at 1000, but it was definetly not black oil. Just out of curiosity, when you drained \\;primary, did a full qt. come out or was your oil level really low?
I am taking her to the dealer next week to get the new pipes . After talking to them today I am having them take the cover off and clean it out , check for wear.Also it was not a full quart when I drained it .I thought that was strange. Thank goodness for the warranty.Thanks for all the input guys.
