I was hearing a strange noise from time to time, and last night, I decided to put the bike in neutral, and kill the motor while I was rolling. I couldn't believe how loud the noise was, and how "crunchy" and shakey the bike is with the motor off.
I'm not sure how to describe the sound it made, but as long as the bike was moving, it was making the noise, and the faster the bike goes, the higher pitched it is. It's kind of a low pitched ringing sound, like a church bell between rings, or a giant tuning fork. I tried applying the brakes, and the noise didn't change, so I know it's not the brakes. Any ideas?
The belt makes somewhat of a howling sound, or maybe check the wheel bearings. Only thing left is the tranny if you've ruled out the brake rotor vibrating. Ron
I don't think it's the belt, because it's more of a metallic ringing sound, but I'm not going to rule it out. Maybe the belt is making the noise, and the fender is resonating it? I've never heard anything like it before.
Do you have spokes in your wheels? I know I'm grasping at straws here, but the tuning fork sound has me baffled. Maybe some loose tin someplace vibrating in the wind or picking up some resonance from the bike? Then there's the classic wind whistle as air goes through something. Ron
Went for a 200+ mile ride today \\;and it didn't make the noise at all, until I was almost home. It's loud enough to hear it over the engine, and sounds like a semi coming to a stop that has glazed brakes, if you know what that sounds like. It's not my brakes, though, because it doesn't change, no matter how hard I apply the brakes. I can also feel a high pitched \\;vibration in the pegs, shocks, and real bad, if I put my hand on the swingarm. I've narrowed it down to wheel bearings, trans output shaft bearings, or the belt itself making contact with the sprockets in some odd way. I did pull a chunk of asphalt out of my rear sprocket today, but don't think it's related. \\;
My 06 Superglide was making a howling noise, parked, with the engine off. Something weird about the shape of the front cast wheel I think. A friend once said he heard a noise coming from my front end. I think the cast wheels on my bike make noise when the wind blows through them. I was in a big parking lot on a windy day when I noticed it. Very strange. The belt will make some noise when coasting.
I know what normal belt noise sounds like, and even thought about the wind blowing through something, but it's definately some kind of mechanical contact going on. The only way to understand, is to hear it yourself. Maybe I should take the video camera out tomorrow.
