Installed the MWL 535 on mine yesterday, which must be a lighter version of yours. Fitment was poor, the front mount did not near fit the curvature of the fender. Believe they are intended to mount on top of the seat tab,too much wobble, ended up drilling out the hole large enough to fit over the fendermount screwholder and mounted below the seat tab after bending the front support tab in a vise until the angle was right. Also the c clip was missing that holds fendermount screwholder in place,so had to hold it in place while I mounted the rear rack support. My fat arm was bleeding from scraping on the fender before this was over.
After this ten minute job was over in about an hour, it all turned out fine, securely mounted and looks great. Also installed the laydown lic plate holder, for twenty bucks it's a hell of an improvement over the factory mount.
Yeh, this one (MWL-530) is advertised as 'beefier'...I had one similar to yours on my Sporty for awhile and, you're right, it wasn't perfect. I ended up putting the rack on FIRST and then the seat tab on TOP of it, which solved the wobbly effect. I have higher hopes for this one, but remains to be seen whether or not I will be disappointed. I mostly wanted something to protect the bare rear fender and have something I could strap a small amount of cargo onto. After seeing the pillion pad at the dealer, I opted for the rack. The pad was bigger than I wanted it to be and since I never ride two-up anyway, I wasn't willing to trade the sleek lines of the Bob for the added bulkiness. If anyone has alternative ideas, please post them...THANKS!
Newer and more expensive isn't always an upgrade. I wrecked my '91 FXRP and ?traded up? for a '98 FXDS with 30,000 less miles. Will we consider that an upgrade? I see it as a downgrade seeing as how the FXR's handle better than any other HD.
Back to the topic... I made my own laggage rack, bigger and stainless steel! I almost forgot FREE.

I see your point, but Dude, you went from FX to another FX. I went from XL to FX. They are totally different animals and for ME, it was a major upgrade...

As you said, totally different. If you trade a corvette for a cadilac...did you upgrade. Never mind, its pointless. Its your opinion so as long as your happy it really dont matter. [sm=biker.gif]
