You will need a special nut, the same one the rear nut for the seat uses, attaches to the fender from under the fender and is held in place with a clip, HD will have them. Basically there is a hole at the back of the fender with a Rubber plug in it, remove it and install that nut. Here is a pic.
can it be used at the same time as the HD removable luggage rack/backrest...or it use one or the other?
Can't see why it wouldn't work. Ought to be able to tell from the pic below. And motherwell also has the nut you need -- very good customer support and fast shipping -- order direct from them is my recommendation. Good luck!
I ordered mine directly from Motherwell and it just arrived today. I also ordered the nutbut I have question about the instal since it dose not come with any insturctions what so ever.
How do you get the nut up under the fender? And does the clip attache under or above the fender?
Please forgive my ignorance but this is my first Harley and the last thing I want to do is screw up my first mod.
I've owned a couple Motherwells that I had mounted on two different scoots (XL1200C from a few years ago and my current FXDBI). I ended up removing them from both for the same reason (I wish I could have recalled why I removed it from the Sporty before buying another for the Dyna).
The way they are (were?) constructed, there is no inner, lateral (left-to-right) tubing in the construction to aid in the placement of bungee cords. Therefore, everything I ever put on it tended to slide in a fore and aft direction. It was very frustrating and I doubt I will ever buy another unless they change the design (if they haven't already).
They are good quality racks and they look nice. Just something to be aware of if you have never owned one and/or thought of how you might secure things to it.
Place a plastic zip tie through the hole in the nut and guide it through the fender hole from underneath the fender. Then place the clip to secure the nut in place(clip above the fender).
Did you order the 7" inch solo directly from Motherwell? Their site is saying that model is out of stock.
