Front caliper/tire replacement problem
I decided to change the front caliper on my 07 bob to a chrome covered one when I changed my front tire out. I used my manual and took off the front tire (which I replaced with a HD screamin eagle) and brought it to the HD dealership here in town to have it put on the stock rim. In the meantime I took off the old front caliper and put on the chrome one with a set of new lyndall pads. I picked up the tire and per the instruction manual put it back on with the new caliper (which I got off of E-bay from a guy who chromes OEM calipers).
Here lies the problem.......the caliper is not centered on the rotor (which is the original stock one). The outside pad (the one away from the bike) rubs! I noticed this after a short test ride after putting everything back together. The rotor was smoking hot, and the inside pad was a good 1/8 - 1/4" away from the rotor. So, I tore it all apart again. Made sure the pads were in correctly, checked and made sure the spacers (which I bought a set of chrome covered ones) were in correctly and bled the brakes (YET AGAIN). Not much if any different.
This time I just took the rotor off and noticed that I had to kind of wedge it in. I then took the original rotor and put it in and noticed it, more or less, it just slid on. I have a dial caliper and measured some things on both comparing the two brake calipers and it seems as though the chromed one is a little thicker in some spots that make a difference when you install it.
Here is the question(s)..........Is there anything else I need to check? I really do not want to start grinding on the caliper or the strut of the bike ( I hoped that spacers would solve the problem, and they would if the other side of the brake calipers pads rubbed) but I think that is my only alternative.
Any help??!!??
as your pads wear the gap between rotor and pad remains the same and the pistons just compress out more..(this is why you need to push the pistons in when changing pads)
the caliper may be defective...you still may have the brakes bled incorrectly...
even if the rotor is off center to the caliper when you squeeze the brakes the pistons should have filled the gap.
