Default Transmission Whinning
I might just being paranoid and I am sure this is just a Harley noise, but I need to ask. When I am slowing down, like at a stop light, and I down shift to first gear before I stop I can hear a winning noise coming from the transmission. It only happens when I am down shifting with the clutch engaged in first gear and it also only happens when downshifting. My Nightster did not make this noise so I am just thinking it is a regular noise on the 6 speed transmission.

1st and 5th gears on the 6 speeds are straight cut gears and do make some whining noise. The other gears are helical cut and quiet.

I figured it was a common noise. We learn something new everyday. Thanks!!! Better safe then sorry.

my fifth gear is noisy ,but my sixth gear is quiet.on my fatbob..

I have belray 85w-140 gearsaver in the transmission and it sounds alot better.

The reason why first and fifth are noisy is its HD's way of remind you to stop holding back and turn her loose. Let that turbine whine

You haven't heard jet turbine noise until you are kneeling between two F-14's in zone 5 afterburner on a night launch. My TC88's whine a little in 4th. It's another one of those Harley things.
