I have been seeing an increasing amount of negative stuff on the forum. Maybe more folks are using them now, or has ThunderMax started to have some quality issues? I am really looking into one of these units for my 06 superglide but I want this expensive upgrade to be worth the dollars and not another "o-no another not so plug and play situation". Is it the newer 96 inchers that are having issues or is it a simple mapping problem or what. Just a little concerned before I plop down that cash. Hiding that expence from the wifey might be the biggest prob besides the module. Anybody have any insight as to what is going on with these units? Hopefully its just the newer models of the 96's and not us lil' 88's that are having issues.
Actually, I have had no real issues with my tmax on my '07. The 6th gear ind. don't work, but they have a fix, I just haven't done it. Other than that, it just keeps on working. Not sure of the issues you've heard, but I for one am quite satisfied. No, it's not exactly plug and play. If you want the most out of it, you have to spend the time to tweak it to your liking. But, if the base map is ok for you, then plug and play will work. Best of luck.
I dont mind modifying a base map... as long as the base map works. Just been hearing stories of base lines not working in that lots of pops and excess heat. I play on a computer all day so fiddling with a laptop on the bike is ok.. I just want to be able to do it all myself without spending a wad at a tuner. That is the whole idea behind me getting a T-Max. I wanna do it myself not pay some ******* at a shop , I can screw my bike up just as good as they can I figure. If it means carrying a laptop on a road trip as part of the tool kit - o well - bigger tool bag. I just need to know it will work and keep up with future cam and head work upgrades.
I recently installed a ThunderMax unit on my '07 Wide Glide. I did have lots of popping on deceleration, but now that is almost gone from adjusting the "Decel Fuel Cut" feature in the T-Max software. Other than the popping I had no problems at all. I had contacted Zipper's about which base map to use and the bike fired up immediately and ran great after I finished the work. I have not done a dyno test but the bike sure feels stronger. I had installed a Doherty "Power Pacc" air cleaner and D&D "Fat Cat" 2-into-1 pipe also. My 6th gear indicatior light works fine too.
My bike has been running great since I installed the Tmax. I had some cold start issues but some simple adjustments in basic setting took care of that. I had a dyno run done a few hundred miles after the install and the bike ran 13 to 13.5 AFR from 0 to 6208 RPM.
Edit...I guess not 0 RPM's.....hot idel is set at 976.........................

Reason: I'm a dumb Ass
I did have an issue with it coming down to proper idle for awhile. It wouldn't come down to 1K until 10mph or less. Every time. I called Zippers, we discussed it, some minor tweaking, and viola, no more problem. I never really did have a problem with decel popping and NEVER had a problem with excess heat. It cooled the bike down a bunch for me.
I'm considering an engine build this winter myself. I've contacted HQ, and they feel the tmax will be just fine, with proper tuning of course. On a more discouraging note, I've also contacted Zippers 2x to see about an engine build. They have yet to respond, and it's been almost 3 weeks!
BTW, I totally agree with your tuner comment. I too just want a good place to start.

My 07 is running great with T-Max. I wasn't too impressed with the map Zipper's initially reccomended (393). I was getting decel pops. Switched to 403 and the bike roars, love it. Spend some time on the ECM forum, rbabos and others will help you out.
