Thanks for the input, I have the manual, it just seems a little imprecise with having the clutch, brake and throttle cables pulling on the bars to a certain degree which would affect the fall away. I guess my next purchase is a jack and give it a shot.
If you do the test again a how to would be great.
Hey jersey devil, i reccomend yo save a few bucks and get a J&S jack, you will absolutely be 100% satisfied with the jack, and you will not need all the plastic shims, nor someone to help assist you when you jack up your dyna !
The manual states to disconnect your clutch cable when performing the fall away check.
Are you from jersey ? I grew up in south jersey years ago !
instead of taking off the clutch cable i just un bolted the whole lever and let it hang...
*Mud, first off i had to laugh at the big nuts joke, dont know if it was one but, made me laugh... as far as the oil, the directions recomended using clean motor oil on the threads, I SH- - you not... In the past i also have used Blue loc tite on stearing stem nuts but I called HD and spoke to a buddy that is one of the service manager mechanics and he said that is what they have been doing on all them as well... I asked why not the loc tite and he said that he does not know, but he did the oil to his own bob as well... so i figured i woudl try it and then in a week check the torque on it to see if it moved, if it did i would add the loc tite... weird huh... i just suck my finder in a quart got a bit of oil on the tip and rubbed it on the threads... we will see, i will update you in a week to see how it holds up... tell you what... love not getting the CLUNK... weird adding oil to a bolt that i do not want to move... seems like a double negitive
What about the pinch bolt Are you suppose to loosen that first then the big nut And when done you are suppose to tighten the pinch then stem bolt Thanks I have a 98 superglide With 40,000 miles and now I am starting to hear a clunk in the front end Thanks for your help
Newbie here...riding an 07 Street Bob. I just did the stem washer nut and checked the fall away, however, when I hit bumps the front end still appears to be clunking. Any ideas what I should check next? Had the bike on the lift and the neck/Stem felt tight. Possibly a front shock issue? I have about 2500 miles on mine.
I need to do the fall away check on mine but I was a bit afraid to attempt dismantling the upper triple tree. I really need to because I've got a pretty bad clunk and the washer has been replaced by my dealer already. I'm quite sure they did not do the fall away check. The bike wasn't back there long enough.
