The 1000 mile service is not just a oil change with syn oil its alot more and if you ever spend any money on service for your bike the 1k service is the one to get. They go over the bike from head to toe adjust everything, lube all cables, + all fluid changes etc etc. You dont have to get it at Harley for warranty issues any service shop that does the 1K service is fine for warranty issues. Prices here in NJ range from 250-350 it is well worth it....
Might want to consider spending the $$ on a service manual and a few special tools and do the job yourself. I can't speak for all dealers, but I can say that not all dealers actually do all of those things on the list for a 1000 mile service or the others. A $300 fluid change is pretty expensive.
All depends on oil type installed and mostly how long they tinker with your bike ,
I believe it runs around $60.00 an hour at my local stealers .
I was quoted $200. to $230. I new the mechanic and it ended uo costing me $145. with an extra set of plugs .
Total labor time was 45 minutes .
OIL
FILTER
PLUGS $40. give or take
Labor to look at a clean up spottless 2007 Low Rider with 965 miles .
$110.00 ,, Geeze...............
Like a lot of guys are saying, basically just an oil change unless you get a really good tech. I was suckered into the service plan when I purchased my bike. It came with 6 pick-ups or drop-offs, and I think it is 3 yearly state inspections.
I bought my bike with a little over 1000 miles already on it and the 1000 service was done by the dealer I purhased it from. (new used) So i don't know what they charged the original owner ... but i would wonder about the warrantee. Would you void the warrantee if you do the service yourself? All HD's come with at least a 2 year warrantee. Seems to me if there's no record that a certified tech did the work they could refuse to honor the warrantee if something goes wrong. Considering my warrantee (which is transferable) is still good for the next 1.5 years I'd be afraid to make it null and void by doing work on the bike myself.
In Addition to the Service if there are any warranty items you need to be sorted out, this is the time to record them with the dealer, My stearing was out of alignment, cables with to much slack, etc, I had a new Tacho fitted, went with Sin 3 oil and the whole lot cost $ 385-00 $299-00 for the service and all the odds and sods I wanted them to fix and the $86-00 to fit the tacho, was worth the time for me as I work 6 days a week 12 hours a day and dont have time to wrench myself, Just want to get on and ride on my day off,
I pre paid mine, but the invoice shows:
(5) syn 3 oil @ $10.99 $54.99
(1) Oil Filter @ $8.99 $8.99
(1) Gasket @ 3.69 $3.69
Total Parts $67.63
Labor 2.5 hrs $200.00
Total Bull5hit cost: $267.63
Ditto on what benwiggin2 said. Complete bull. Bike hasn't been to the shop since. Do all my own work, comes out better and plenty of money saved for adult beverages when completed.
I paid 325 as a walk on and was outta there on a Friday afternoon at 6:00. Coulda, shoulda done it myself, but it was worth it. screw it, i lounged while they worked....
