No, doing your own service DOES NOT void your waranty. Save every receipt for the oil, filter, seals, etc. Document the service in your owner's manual in the spaces provided.
The oil change o-rings from the dealer come as a kit of 4 pieces in a bag. I use a black sharpy to write on the bag "1000 mile service" then insert my reciept from the dealer and the reciept for the Amsoil 20/50 in the empty bag and then put it in the file folder which is labeled 08 FXDF.
I have 11,000 miles on my FXDF and have preformed all of the required services at thier prescribed intervals.
I bought a service manual and the electrical diagnostics manual, 3 filters, 3 o-ring kits and 9 quarts of oil for less than what most of you are paying for service at the dealerships!

Glad i read this post. Barnet Harley in Las Cruces just priced my 1000 mile service at $370.00. I have an appointment next week, think I will do some shoping around.
Ok hold on to your seat guys, here in CA, it's $415 for the first service. I have scheduled one on the 26th. This will be my first and last service there...all the dealers here quote around $400 SFO bay area...I wish I had never moved from NJ. But again think of it, I can ride here pretty much all year long.
General mechanic labor per hour is $98 and Harley labor if $125 per hour!!!!
Get to know your motorcycle by doing this service yourself! Spend a hundred or so for the fluids, seal kit, and service manual, then spend the money you saved ($200 bucks, it seems) on something cool or just food and beer.
It's basically a tri-fluid change, clutch adjustment, and a solid once over. Tightened stuff up, and learned in the process.
Your bike wants to know you, so get dwon and know it!
p.s. '09 Street Bobs are UGLY! Love my '08, and know where that extra grand went.
