Default forward controls conversion

I would like to change my 02 Low Rider to forward controls. Can anyone give me any help on what is involved? It looks like i would need to remove the shifter stud and hook the linkage direct. is this much trouble? how about the brake side? what should be aware of before making an attempt at this?
Thanks
TL

Longer brake line would be required, so you'd have to refill and bleed.

Longer shift rod would connect from the tranny lever to the forward mounted shift lever. Easy job. You'd also have to do something with that old shaft, etc. that goes through your primary. Not so easy job.

I am about to do this myself on an '05 Low Rider. Here are the instructions for Kuryakyn forward controls.
http://www.kuryakyn.com/documents/in...-21HD-0205.pdf
I think instalation is about $150 or 2hrs labor at a Harley shop but you will need to buy a lift ($90 or so at sears) to do it yourself. I bought the parts on eBay for $300 + $15 shipping and the lift (+$90) for a total of $405 plus my time and labor (priceless learning experience). This is opposed to $400 for parts ($300 for Harley parts) and $150 installation: $550 and knowing the job was done by Professionals(?). It's you money and time and your choice.

On Dyna models you will get extension bars for both the brake and shifter levers so you will not need to bleed the brake system. As explained above the Kuryakyn kit comes with stuff to tie off and hide the old shifter parts.

I did the conversion on my 05 Low rider with the 2" extention. The hardest part is removing the mid controlls, other than that its pretty straight forward & easy. Just remember to use the red thread lock. Should only take an hour 2 at the most in your driveway. A lift is helpfull, but I did it on the ground with no problem it was the 1st time i turned a wrench on a bike.

The brake side seems like a piece of cake removing the old pegs without a lift but the shifter side looks like a bitch. Is the kickstand attached separately from the pegs?

The kick stand is a seperate piece & non issue, the shifter side was easy but one of the bolts to remove the brake rod was a real headache. Other than that, the install was a breaze.

So you leave the shifting mechanism in the primary? hmmm. and i guess just leave the splined shaft thru the side cover. that certainly doesn't seem too hard.
thanks for the info.

hyper2005lr,
why the 2" extensions? i would guess they lengthen the distane to the pegs 2". are you taller and like the extra room? any other advantage?

Great looking bike TL. I have also installed 2" extensions on the forward controls of my '99 FXD. Once I found all the right parts, the installation was straight forward. Yes the extensions just give a little more leg room - I'm 6'3" and have long legs.

Edit: does anyone know how to correctly remove the old shifter shaft completely from the primary? I have the service manual but I don't see anything of detail on it...

I've done some checking on removing the shifter mech from the primary, its about a $200 job at the dealer, from what I understand you need some special tools etc... . The 2" is nice, I'm 6'2 with long legs, the 2" extention was 10x more comfortable than the fwd controls without it.
