Default breaking in the streetbob without a tach

How'd you bob owners do it? I'm waiting on my V&H pipes. The manuel says to keep her under 3000 RPM's. I can't even hear the motor when its windy. so how do I know if I am approaching 3000 RPM's?

if you do what the manual tells you you will be lugging the motor so just go throu the gears on the throttle but try not to hit the rev limiter and youll be fine

Here's how I've been doing it:

Watching the speedo...Shift into 2nd at 20mph, 3rd at 30, 4th at 40 and when I get up to 50, I roll off to 45 and stay in 4th.

Shame your not breaking in the 5th and sixth gear

For the first 200 keep to nothing more than 50 and dont lug , you should be using 5th then .
After that go to 60 mph .
After 600 miles gradually increase speed without constant throttle openings
Your feel when it loosens up
My dealer says they are run in at 500 but i would play it cool past that

I'm not breaking in any of the gears, I'm breaking in the engine and, in keeping with the 50mph rule, 4th is about all I can get out of it at the moment...

I just bought a streetbob this week:
http://www.geocities.com/myharleystreetbob

My dealer told me not to go over 50mph for the first 50 or 100 miles.

Mine said 55 or less for 100, 65 or less for 200 or 250, and keep it under 75 until 500. I had 50 miles on it and was headed to a BBQ/rally at the local shop and looked down and was at almost 70 mph...oops.

when i broke in my last new bike i was a freek i was totally nervous and listening to evey little noise and i was breaking it in by the book to a t. If i went over by 10 miles per hour i was in a panic and thought that i ruined my bike. Well this one i am alittle more grounded, its all about rpm you dont want to revthbg off it or lugging it and continuing to go up and down in rpm trying not to stay constant for over 5 min. But if you are going 50 in 4th gear and lets say thats 2500 rpm then i can go 70 in 6th and be at 2500 rpm. I think the thing i miss the most about my last bike is the tach, miles dont meen a thing, fortunatly as a result of listening so closely to my last bike i am pretty in tune to where the rpms are at.

This thread is like my tact post. Sort of what to do to keep within recommendations on breaking in motor and if a tach is really necessary. I rode my first ever harley last week and didn't even think to check for rpm. Just listened to motor. It was a friend's 1200 Low stage-1. I think when my Bob comes in I'll just shift early and keep it out of high rev's and if I get on the highway I'll stay in 6th around 65. Luckily Harley's have enough low end torque to be forgiving if you go into a gear a little early. How about a tach yes or no for anyone visiting this thread.

The only part of the drive train that need "breaking in" is the rings. Same as any other 4 stroke motor.

I think H-D is extremly conservative in their break in procedures. Break in the bike the same way you'de break in a fresh rebuild or a new car. By the time I get the bike, it will already have gone through a couple of heat cycles, and probably 30-45 minutes of run time. I'll ride it kind of easy for the first few hundred miles. But that just means I won't hammer it. Watch the fluids close. Change fluids at 200-300 miles. Done. Ready for 50,000 miles of fun.
