It would be better to slot the front hole forward instead of straight down. In fact the front bolt is easy to remove so I didn't even bother to slot it at all.
THAT IS A GOOD IDEA. Most of the upward stress would be on the front bolts.
the bolts are smaller than the round part of the hole... the plate drops deep and is fully compressed into the strut. It ,or my passenger, ain't goin nowhere...
as far as scratchin the fender... a towel on fender will provide safety for that.
anyways, could spend $180 for new sideplate and mounting kit or just do this for free with the sideplates I already had that came with the bike.
Ha, I actually have done the same exact thing and have been running with it for a good month now. Works just fine. It aint' goin' NOWHERE! It looks in very tightly.
Maybe a stupid question, but do you have to tighten/loosen the bolts every time, or do you just find a sweetspot and slide it in and out? When my bags are on it is damn near impossible to get at the front nuts.

will have to tighten, loosen every time.
the bolts still gotta hold the fender and strut together.

This is what I did with mine. then had someone custom make the bar I have so that the brackets are on the outside of the struts. Makes it much easier to take it on and off.
I am considering bending my brackets so they will go inside the struts again because I never take it off anymore.
Your idea works great. It would be better to slot the front hole forward instead of straight down. In fact the front bolt is easy to remove so I didn't even bother to slot it at all.
Good Luck

+1, I just did the slot on the rear hole only, very easy to take on and off and don't have to worry about losing a passenger.

+1 on this. I see no downside to slotting the front hole forward and it should provide an extra safety factor. A great mod in any case.
