Hi guy's, i'm 37 and just bought my first HD, 99 super. Took it for a spin yesterday and now i know why they say theirs nothin like a Harley. Had a few questions as i would like your advice. There seems to be rust on some of the screws and bolts that i would like to clean up without damaging them. Thinking about using som CLR but not sure. Also i noticed on the bottom of the rear jug a little oil, maybe were it may be leaking some, big job to have this repaired?
Okay. First congrats. I have the same bike, same year and love mine.
I'm not sure which screws and bolts you are having issues with, but I would try Chrome Cleaner/Polish first. It should be abrasive enough to remove the surface rust and oxidation. Just be careful around any paint.
The "oil leak" you speak of might just be minor seepage. Clean it up. I use Shout Triple Acting laundry cleaner, and for more stubborn spots I use brake cleaner. Spray on cool engine, maybe a little brushing, hose it off. You can use Simple Green, whatever.
See how long before it comes back. I clean mine up about once a month which is about a thousand miles. No way would I have a repair done for that. Its just a little annoying to me, not a major issue.
Do you have any mods in mind?
I see a few nice options there. Forward controls, Grips, Mirrors, layback plate, slip ons.
Are the handlebars stock?
Looks good
I do have a couple things in mind. The guy i bought it from was telling me about a chrome engine guard kit which sounds pretty neat. I'd like to change the upper and lower belt guards and maybe a coil cover. Gas cap can go and mabe the plate on the fuel tank as well. Not in any hurry though i really like the look of it as is. Read a little about the stock cams being bad, have you had yours replaced? Bike has 24,000 km's on it. I think she sat in the rain a few times as almost every fastener has a little rust on it. The engine is completely stock right now. As i am very new at owning a HD any advise you could give me would be greatly appriciated. Not sure if the bars are stock, they are a fair bit smaller than the ones on yours, are yours stock? Thanks Bro.
Don't worry about the cam bearings. That was only on the very early 99's and they should have fixed all of those by now. By the way, my '01 has that minor oil seepage that I see on yours. no big deal either I just clean it off 2-3 times a year with soap and water.
If the seepage you are seeing is along a seam between the engine and transmission case, that's a residue from the two cases rubbing together, quite common and more visible on silver engines. The rust issue, I'd try some WD40 and a toothbrush if the screw is next to some polished aluminum, if it's by itself then some WD40 and a piece of scotchbrite. Welcome to the site and enjoy your FXD.
