About ready to get an 09 Fat Bob and wanted to know what is the general thought about forward vs. mid mounted controls. It looks like the forward control is really close to the exhaust for the right leg. I'm 5' 11" with 34" inseam. Do most go with the forward controls, or get mid mounted and then install a set of hiway pegs ?
Look, there is no real question. You are 5-11, so therefore you NEED to have forward controls. Mid's are like having your knees bent to your chin. Forwards take 300 miles to get use to, assuming you've never ridden with them before. You can do what I did on my Fat Bob, get forward controls and simply install floorboards. Then you have the best of both worlds. I wouldn't ride it any other way.
fowards for better comfort but the mids will provide a better platform for you to "ride hard".
my knee won't allow me to ride mids without aching after 20 min.(long legs). so I have fowards...
With a 34" inseam you'll be glad you got forward controls. They will take no time to get used to and riding hard is easy. You'll see. Go with the forwards. I'm 6'3" and with a 35" inseam and I even put highway pegs on my forward controls and use them all of the time. I do fold them up some when riding hard in the twisties.

Only you can answer that question. You will get a lot of mixed opinions about this subject. I can tell you that I have forwards and am 6' tall and love them. My bike came with mids but it was uncomfortable for me. The only way for you to know is to try them. If you can't test ride a fat bob with mids, try a different Dyna that has them. It will give you an idea. Also test ride a Dyna with forwards.
My 08 FXDC came with mids. I added the chrome highway peg plates (that have 2 different positions) and pegs and 90% of the time I'm on the frt pegs and I shift and brake with my heel ....I'm 5'11" ...It's perfect ...I have 2 foot placement options and can shift and brake from either with ease ...ya cant do that if you start out with forwards...

+1, best of both worlds for me. Try a couple of configs at the dealer. Good luck!
