The bike I have been looking at is very nice and very unique. Only thing is it has a small primary leak at the bottom ner the drain plug. I questioned the owner and he said that it has leaked since he got and he has never beena ble to fix it. He says it's pretty slow maybe a qt every 3K. Would this be a deal breaker for you assuming the bike was otherwide everything you ever wanted in a bike and you knew you could not find another one just like it?
If it was the bike I wanted and the price was right, I would definately get it knowing I need to spend money to get it right. I would not be satisfied owning a Harley which leaked a quart of oil every 3000 miles. I would determine if it needed gaskets and or seals, or if I should just consider replacing the inner and outer primary covers. Take offs should be readily available (depending on the year and finish) and could be replaced at a reasonable cost.
If I remember correctly - the work on the bike was done by the guy himself - and it was pretty extensive and detailed. If he's capable of doing the detail work, but couldn't fix a leak - then I'd guess the leak can not be fixed without replacing the inner and/or outer primary? Ask him if he's done that, or just changed gaskets.
That said - I would not be concerned if the leak was between the outer and inner, but if it's on the inside of the inner primary, then I'd be a bit more hesitant.
Is it actually leaking a qt every 3k, or is it using a qt?
Some of the 05 motors had inferior valve seals that make them use more oil than they should.
something is wrong that bike was heavily modified if I remember why cant they stop a leak? Maybe covers are cracked and he does not want to spend time and money. you need to investigate further
i know when i put on forward controls on my 07 dyna i had to take the inner and outer primary off well put everything back on ended up having a oil leak, at first it looked to be coming from the drain plug. but after further investigation it was coming from the inner main shaft seal on the back side of the inner primary if the seal has gone it will looked to be leaking at the plug but actually be running down the back of the inner primary down to alittle lip built in to the cover and the running on down to the drain plug.this is just to give you a direction to check on. if this is it, its kinda a pain to change but i wouldnt let it be a deal breaker.it will give you a chance to put some chrome inner and out primary covers on.just make sure to put new seals on. ride safe and i hope this helps
