I have a 2009 FXD which came with a speedo only...hated that, could never tell what gear I was in! I just installed the MicroTach (www.speedwayinstruments.com) and it is very cool! My question is what is the best RPM range for normal riding? I have been shifting around 3,000 and down shifting at around 2,000. Is this the best operating range for the engine and mileage?

Shark,
How was the install? Where did you mount that thing? I was thinking about mounting one to my master cylinder but don't know if I could get the wire through the bars without re-wiring the whole side internally again. I may just mount it to the dash panel below the speedo.

Shift points are basically your call, tach or no tach. Personally moving up through the gears I shift around 4500; Downshift around 2K; Cruise between 2500 and 3000.

I mounted it to the master cylinder and it was really easy to route the wires down. You just need to remove the headlamp, slit the plastic holding the speedo wires and wire clamp 3 wires and then wrap with tape. Real simple! I routed the wires along the current wiring.

Mine are internally wired, so I think I may mount it somewhere on the center line. I am thinking of some kind of a simple plate mount that would fit under the riser clamp similar to a sporty speedo mount. That way I can just run the wires into the bundle between the risers. Option two may be a similar fab mount just forward of the speedo. I need to order the tach and start with some mock-ups. Thanks for the info.

The MoCo makes a side-by-side riser mount for the Tach and Speedo, but if you've already got a small one, there's a mount that goes on the nut atop the triple tree so the tach sets right between the front of the tank and the riser, the maker is a company called Alloy Art. See attached photo.

I might do that, but I was looking for something a little less conspicuous. I am leaning towards some kind of mount on top of the stem nut, either with 3M tape or a fabbed bracket that clamps down under the beauty cover when you tighten it down. I will post some pictures once I get going on it.

It showed up today, and I decided to go with a mount fixed to the acorn nut on the right side of the top tank lift bolt. Works great, and is in the same field of view as the speedo, so no eyeshift needed. It is a nice unit, really easy to install.

That is sweet. I've been wanting a tach, now I know what and where. Thanks.
