Yo Trooper,
I had a problem with a leak coming from under the leather bib and my upper left leg would get damp. Turned out the access panel on top of the gas tank had several loose fasteners. I tightened the fasteners and bye bye leak. You never said if you had a gas smell just that it wasn't battery acid. Just a thought.
Hey trooper drink a Victoria Bitter for me. I have laid to rest many VB's in my day. I have visited Down under many times and you have a great country BTW!

Get your nose down close to the butt end of the tank and snifffffff.
If it smells like gas the top plate gasket may be leaking gas down the length of the tank, under the tank bib and coming out near the seat.
