Ok, I have searched on the forum for winterizing bikes and found a lot of great information. I still have one question regarding the chrome. My brother used to put Vaseline on his chrome and wiped it off in the spring. This sounds messy and I wonder if it is needed. It seems as if it could also trap any water between the Vaseline and chrome as well as keeping outside moisture off the chrome. What do you winter harley owners do?
well i sit in the garage with a dumb look on my face drooling over my bike for 5 months, counting down the days until spring comes. my wife told me that i have split personality (winter and riding season).
just j/k. i have never heard of that one before with vasoline, but if you put the vasoline on prior to the moister on the bike, it should shield it from the elements. but i would still check around for a few different ideas, because like you said sounds like it could get messy. but i live in michigan and just use a breathable cover and havnt have any problems. jackyl
I wouldn't use anything different on your chrome, than what you would use any other time of the year.
Just use a good quality wax, and you'll be fine.
Vaseline is a petroleum jelly, and should help protect from rusting, but it's gonna be quite messy too. I wouldn't use it.
Is the bike going to be sitting outside in the snow?
Thanks for the response. I too am in Michigan, Brownstown to be exact.
Do you put anything on your chrome? I would think that wax or something wouldn't be a bad idea.
Thanks for your time.
Sincerely,
Jeff
WOW!!! jeff you live about 2 miles from house, i live in taylor (tele. & wick), we need to hook up and go for a ride one day. bbut to answer your question, my wife just gives my bike a good waxing and thats it. jackyl
Every year on my bike I just give it a very, very thorough detail job then put fuel stabilizer in the gas tank and the breathable cover over it. My garage isn't heated either and I've never had any issues at all.
+1 on a good wax and good detail job. I also keep it covered with a breathable cover. But I keep mine in the house where it dosen't go to long without some attention during the winter months. Jackyl let me in on the secret of having your wife wax it for ya. My girlfriend dosen't do that.
I live in IOWA. It gets -30 and heavy snow most winters. Disconnect the battery, fill the gas tank and add STA-BIL to the gas. Parking on a piece of carpet in a garage will keep the moisture off of it. Last winter I kept my battery hooked up and all my fuse connections are corrosion green now.
