I have a 2005 WG.When I get on the bike and straighten the bars I hear a clunk.I also hear a noise that sounds like steel on steel when I hit a good bump in the road. There is no movement i the head bearings, and I replaced the wheel bearings aswell.Any ideas where to look? Thanks
yes. the 41mm wideglide front end has a service bulletin on it... torque the top bolt to 60-80 ft-lbs not the original 40ft-lbs. the front end has a little bit larger hole than the size of the stem. A notorious clunk issue. Also check all other bolts and be sure they are tight as well.
I have an 03 WG with the proverbial clunk. I read a lot of tips on tightening the kick stand as well as a great post how to modify the washer at the head bearing. Nothing worked, every decent bump I still got a clunk. After about 6-8 months another post suggested the gas tank might be loose. I shook it wiggled it, no clunk. But WTF I thought-nothing else worked, so all I did was to tighten up both bolts a little more. No more clunk.
I swore that when I heard the clunk it was from the bearing head, I felt it there so that's why I kind of gave up and decided to ride with the clunk. Check out and tighted your gas tank, that could be the simple problem. If not you've eliminated at least one potential.
