Default Tire Question

I have an 05' FXDLI. I had a 150/80 71H ME 880 Marathon (Metzler) installed by the dealer at approximately 10K. I now have about 19K on the bike and the tire still has a couple of K left but I'm going to change it out at 20K. The Metzler fitment chart gives an optional choice of the 160/80 75H in the 880 Marathon series for the bike. Has anyone upgraded to this size without changing anything other than the tire/tube? Or should I just stay with the 150? Someone told me that Metzlers were a little narrower than the stock 150 Dunlops. Any advice would be appreciated.

I had an extensive email back-and-forth with metzeler a while back.

Attached is his final reply - but the short story is - It will fit on a stock rim - but is listed as an exception to normal fitment for this tire.

from Metzeler:

"On pages of the fitment area we note that the 160/80-16 is a approved fitment for the 3.00 rim on many Harley applications as in (# designates special tire fitment on OE rim.) This note is shown to state that there is an exception of rim width for the bikes listed in the fitment area. That's it and thanks for asking more clearly.

I have a 160 ME880 on the rear of my 05 WG, no problem at all. I have been told by one of my indy's that any wider could cause some roll on a stock wheel, but I have had no issues, handles very well. I don't have tubes anymore though.

I saw a 150 come off of a softail this weekend and the wiring that goes to the taillight was starting to get chewed up as the wider tire was rubbing on the inside of the fender. I could care less about tire width.
