Default tire/rim combo width ???

got a 4.5" wide x 17" HD roadwinder wheel for my 06' street glide and was wondering what size tire I can use on that width rim on my bike.. It came to me with a 170 tire on it ( i cant use that wide of a tire I know ) so I am removing that tire and didnt know if a 150 series tire would work on that wide of a rim ...I have heard of guys squeezing a 160 tire on a 3" rim in there but i'm not sure what installing a tire on a wider rim does to the profile of the tire as far as width ... so I was thinking a 150 maybe ??? dont want to sacrifice safety if that tire is to skinny for a 4.5' wide rim ... if so what 150-17 tire would be best for a street glide riding 2 up alot of the time with the wife ...? Thanks

In general bub, you can fit any 17" tire on any 17" wheel so long as that tire doesn't slip off once aired up. The difference is going to occur in height & width ratios. A lower height tire with a narrower width will fill the rim but will leave an tread pattern that doesn't compensate for its size. In other words, your tread at this size is going to come up short in a tight turn. Not so bad in cars but w/ cycles a problem because soon you are gonna make turns on your sidewall. Roughly, in general.
That 170 tire is probably good. a 150 tire is more narrow. I am currently using 130 tires on a 16", somewhere in the ball park of 3 1/2" rim- the entire width of the wheel inflated is, like, just over 5" or so. That 170 is likely to mount up just fine giving your overall tire width somewhere around 6 1/2" or 7". I can't say for sure, because you didn't mention its full ratio, but if you measure its dry size then add 1/2 in=approximately, aired size. Roughly. Cool?.
