I've never heard of anyone having a lubrication related failure due to lack of oil changes. I have heard of two cases where there was no oil in the engine, which caused a failure, but that's it.

I change the oil in my cars about every 20,000 miles or so. In the bike, I'll go every 10,000. Anything more frequent than that, you're just throwing money down the drain.

For the record, I got rid of my last Jeep at 250,000+ miles - just because it had 250,000+ miles on it. My current Jeep has 90,000+ miles, and has had the oil changed a total of 4 times. My wife's Camaro has 72,000 miles on it. None of my vehicles have ever needed anything other than routine maintenance and repairs (tires, battery, etc.)

The "every 3,000" mile oil change requirement is a bunch of hooey, promoted by the oil companies.

I don't recommend it, but in my younger years I've done pretty much the same thing. I had a 79 chevette that I put about 60,000 miles on without changing the oil. The car had about 120,000 on it when I parked it because I got new car. The thing ran fine other than the brakes and trans were shot. did the same to an S10. It had a 170,000 when I sold it and the guy I got it from put another 50k on it when it got wrecked. I don't do these antics anymore, and I keep up on all my vehicles now, but I never had a problem with either vehicle that I didn't take good care of. It was probably a little bit of luck though too.

Hello

I changed my oil at 500 miles because that's when I put on my oil cooler, I put in Syn-3. At the 1000 mile mark, I changed out my stock(2007 fxd) derby cover for the chrome one, so I changed that fluid to Syn-3 along with the trans fluid.

I will go the recommended 5000 mile intervals in the manual for the engine, and half of the recommended 20,000(10,000) for the primary and trans.

My reason for not changing more often is that I have read that it is actually more harmful to change oils frequently because more engine wear is caused by oil starved parts at start-up after an oil change than by oil that is dirty or old.

By the way, Syn-3, so far has been great, I have read some negative comments, but my experience with it has been very positive. I will be staying with that oil.

Personally, I think you'd be wasting your money if you do the oil change at 7500 miles. The recommended 5000 interval is fine and you won't find any difference in the longevity of our motor if you change oil more frequently. The only time I've ever changed my oil with less than 5000 miles on it was when I lived in the cold climates and would store the bikes for the winter. Oil would be changed prior to storage regardless of how many miles on it.

You know, I read somewhere that the US is the only country that changes motor oil at
3K mile limits. All other countries go like 12K or something. The article stated that the
3K mile oil change was/is a gimic by the oil industry.

That being said, I change my oil every 3K on my vehicles and my bike. I'll err on the side of caution.
