Just out of curiosity, what does your "miles to empty" counter say? At fill-up (and after you've ridden about a block), it should register something like 180 miles.
When the gauge finally made it up to almost 1/2 the MTE read 83 miles. But the tank was full up to bottom of the restricter.
I traded in my 08 Sportster on the Super Glide Custom the day after Christmas. I sat on one with forward controls but since Im vertically challenged it was to much of a stretch. I went with the mid controls and plan on getting highway pegs as several people mentioned here. I got out for about 150 miles on Sunday and let me tell you I spent most of the evening picking bugs from my teeth because of the huge smile I had on while riding. The ride is definately more comfortable than the Sporty, as far as power goes Im sure its there but I am going to baby her till that 500 mile break in is over.
Let me start off by saying that I never visually verified that the tank was full up to the filler plate at the dealer. The guy that filled it up (supposedly) said it was.
First thing I did today was stop at the gas station and fill up. It took 2.9 gal, so I knew something was up. Sure enough, when I turned the switch on the needle went right to full. The trip meter was set at the dealer and had 29 miles on it. So either this thing gets 10 mpg, or the boob at the dealer doesn't know how to fill a tank up.

Anyway, the gas gauge works just fine.
Glad to hear that it was a dealer snafu. Now, just ignore the fuel gauge. You'll find that the MTE is actually pretty darn accurate.
Your '08 model won't have it. The MTE feature was added to the '09 models.
How does the computer calculate MTE? Is it actually based on the average MPG you're getting on that tank, or is it based on a preset MPG like the EPA estimate?
