gonna change my wheels tomorrow, manual says replace drive pully bolts.. i think its just because they come with thredlocker on them from harley,, cant i just clean and reuse the old bolts and apply new threadlocker if there in good shape??
Without a doubt, replace them. The torque values are high enough and new bolts are relatively cheap. Search the forums for pulley bolt failures and read some of the horror stories and close calls. Most (if not all) of those failures have been attributed to re-used bolts. Usually by techs at the dealerships....
Re-using them is not worth it, man. Replace 'em. Torque 'em to spec. And check 'em periodically.
I've marked my bolt heads for 2 reasons:
1) Quick visual will tell me if they've broken loose and are backing out.
2) If and when a dealership ever pulls my rear wheel for anything, I'll be able to immediately tell if they re-used the original bolts.
Replace!!! i replaced my bolts with hardend steel ones, maked them as well (great minds think alike) and still check them every few weeks... it is a mess when they go bad
DO NOT REUSE THE BOLTS! they cannot handle a retorque. you do not want to snap a bolt off in your hub. i learned the hard way.
they are only about 2.50 each. money well spent.
Buy you some good 12-point bolts. To take the old ones off without risk of breaking them off in the hub, put the socket on them with an extension and give them a few good whacks with a hammer. This will loosen up the thread locker.
Where would be the best place to buy new ones ? The dealer or what, glad i ran across this thread. My new pulley will be here Fri. Also for thread locker should i use red or blue?
You're looking for "Grade 8" bolts. Dealership is a good place to start since they should know the proper bolt dimensions for your bike and keep them in stock.
If you don't want to go to a dealership, pull one of your existing bolts and take it with you to a hardware store. Gotta be exact matches for length, thread pattern, diameter, etc. And they've gotta be Grade 8.

I was told the same thing about the rotor bolts. Replace them. they also can't handle a retorque.
My brother in law also had his pully bolts break when he reused them. He had to his rear wheel.
