Default Detach. backrest - having issue

I already have the rigid mount backrest. If I switch to detachable sideplates, can I still use the upright or is there a specific upright that is used for detachable sideplates as they seem to end up being wider than the rigid mount.

EDIT: Go to page 3 for explanation

From looking at the accessories catalog it looks like they both use the same uprights. Mine is 8 3/4" wide beetweent the side plates.

Not sure of part numbers, but my upright is 7 & 11/16 inches between the insides of the uprights.

Hey Longhair, just notch your ridgid sideplates. That way all you need to do is loosen the bolts and slip it in or out. Works great. Sorry but I have no pics of mine but if you do a search in the how to threads you'll find it. Jusy giving you another option.

Hi SC-Longhair. 99% sure the backrests fit both types of sideplates. I wanted to let you know I have the detachables on my '07 LR and they rattle like crazy unless I wrap the posts with black tape. Of course after wrapping the posts with the tape the fit so snug it gets kinda hard to get them on and off--sort of defeats the whole purpose ya know.

I did think about that. I'm familiar with the post you're talking about. I have way too much time to kill at work. Thanks for the reminder though.

Is it the sideplate that rattles on the post? Do they still rattle when you have a passenger applying pressure?

Do they still rattle when you have a passenger applying pressure? When my wife is against the backrest they do not rattle. If riding solo and having something bungeed to the luggage rack they still rattle.

NolaMike...I'll keep that in mind. I think I'm going forward with this though. Who knows, maybe I can come up with a more permanent mod to stop it from rattling.

I priced out the sideplates and docking hardware at hd.com...$164.90 + tax. At Zanotti's...$144.42 which includes $14.99 shipping. Even found ebayers charging $15-20 more for the hardware than you can buy it at your local dealer for. Amazing.

+1 for notching the rigid sideplates. Cheaper and cleaner.
