I read about the rattle before I bought my detachable hardware, it is common because the hard rubber/plastic the brackets ride on get worn.....(from vibration) so H-D recommends loosening the mount and twisting the rubber a 1/4 turn and tightening everything back up. After you've done that three times it's time to buy new rubbers
I received my order from Zanotti's today. I'm a little excited to switch out the rigid sideplates for the detachable ones but it's already 4:30pm and 50 degrees outside. I don't have a garage so whatever maint. or mods I do, I'm subject to the elements. There is only about an hour of sunlight left.
Who am I kiddin? I'm gonna start it because I'm a little OCD with parts and need to do it NOW. lol

It's just like cocaine. The UPS man leaves the little package and your heart starts racing!
The thrill is getting the stuff and the low is right after you do it all......
...ya end up saying to yourself: "Gee, that didn't take long and now it's all over."
Then it's back to ebay/Zanotti's/DennisKirk/J&P for another fix!!
Maybe we all need an intervention.............
...............or higher spending limits on the Visa card!
Ehhh, I didn't get to play. I had to go do daddy things, like food shopping. That's ok. I can do it tomorrow when it's a little warmer during the middle of the day.
Who could resist this:

When I try to install the backrest....the front of the sideplate is hitting the siderail preventing it from seating properly. The front of the siderail has gouged the chrome siderail and I'm effin pissed off.
I don't know if the sideplates have the incorrect bend for my application because they seem to be slightly bent inward for a tight fit which makes sense. I don't know if they are just a hair too long which is my second thought. Damn gooks.
On a side note....it ticks me off that on the parts label on the box it states very clearly "Made in Taiwan".

I think what you describe as a problem is why mine doesn't rattle. Your's sounds a little tighter than mine but I have to literaly pull the front two connections apart to even come close to fitting on the mounting posts.
Maybe you should just manhandle it and pull the side plates apart a little and hope they don't rattle when you are done.
Don't tighten your mounting bolts up until you've got the side plates in place. I know that may not help with the side to side clearance.....
Also, it looks like you have the sundowner seat mounted in your sig pic. Is that still the case? If so, you'll have a bit of a tussle getting the thing off and on. I have to come in at a low angle to get my bars on, but it works.
Yes I currently have the sundowner 2-up. I will be going to a solo/p-pad setup in the near future. Probably a mustang vintage solo...
Without any backrest on the bike, and the apes I'm really diggin the look of the bike. It doesn't look so geezerish. lol
Upon further inspection of the detachable sideplates, they look bent and not in a good way. I've emailed Zanotti's for some guidance since that's where I bought the stuff. If I need to, I'll go to my local (60 miles away) dealer to compare parts. That way I can speak with Zanotti's with some intelligence. yeah I know, might be a stretch.
I'm really at a loss with this. This is probably the easiest mod to do and I'm havin a time. I do like the fact that the docking hardware does away with those ugly damn torx bits on the siderails. If it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.............
