Enjoy the detachables. Hopefully yours won't rattle. If they do rattle and you come up with something better than black tape please post it.

I couldn't agree more! I thought I was the only one who used black tape. There has to be something more permanent to address this problem. I remove my back rest when riding solo, so mine is removed quite often.
Just be aware of this if someone chooses to go with the removable route.

I have the detachable backrest on my 07 DWG. No rattles or problems.
It may be because my uprights are squeezed inward a bit. To mount the side plates I have to pry them apart just a little to slip onto the posts. Tight fit.

I remember installing the sideplates. Very tight fit between the fender and the side rail. Not sure I like the idea of notching them. If they just slipped in and out, that may be a different story. I'm thinking I can live with having two little doo-hickeys sticking out each side. I'm looking at getting a set of saddlebags anyway so they should cover up any possible unsightliness of the docking hardware. Looking at getting a set of River Road slant style bags found here.

Of course, installing them will be contingent upon me installing this as my taillight:

It has integrated turn signals.

I tend to carry a lot of stuff when I ride such as jacket, gloves, chaps, etc. just in case. I also need a saddlebag large enough to carry my laptop. I have lots of time to kill at work and generally no one says anything about me using it. Although I don't flaunt it in front of my management either but they do see me come in with it and are well aware of what it is.

Anyway, I did order the parts from Zanotti's. Their online inventory showed they had 1 set of the sideplates and 1 set of the docking hardware in stock. After I ordered, they emailed me to say they didn't have the sideplates in stock and they would have to order them from HD. So here I sit, waiting for them to be delivered to Zanotti's so they can then ship my order. Hopefully it'll be before the end of the week.

A rattling mount would not make me very confident in it's strength to support a passenger. Have you thought about the Kury plug n play? That is the way I went, and for the most part really like it when I use it. Not much of a price difference from what I see in your post.

RSA, I looked at that setup. Not sure I like it. Especially that piece of hardware that lies under the seat. I'm planning on switching between solo and two up as needed and having that bracket on the fender doesn't add to the solo look at all.

[EDIT] Rsa, I just checked your website. You should have mentioned you had good photos on there. I didn't realize the mount bracket for the Kury was part of the backrest and was removed for solo applications. Actually doesn't look that bad.

That was the reason I went with it, Since I have done it a few times now, it only takes about 10 minutes to go from solo to 2up or visa-versa, including footpeg mounts.
Best part is the lines stay clean in 2up since you have nothing on the side of the fender, it's all on top and under the seat.

I have the detachables on my Fat Bob and I've never heard them rattle. The backrests are the same. The detachable sideplates are bent inward to maintain the same critical dimension.
