06 Streetbob with spoked wheels.
To make a long story short, I picked up a screw in my rear tire late last night, it went flat about 8 miles from home. It was either ride it or leave it and I was not in a great neighborhood either. I must have hit 5 gas stations within that 8 miles for air + I paid 5 bucks for a can of that inflatable stuff, each gas station cost me 75 cents for air. well I made it and just before a tremendous rainstorm.
I was getting near buying a new tire anyhow, not a big deal. So today I put a plug in the tire, fill er up with air and notice a few leaks at the bottom of several spokes and the air valve which can be replaced, but what about the spokes? Are there seals behind each one?
you will need a new tire strip on the inside of the rim, i NEVER plug cycle tires, EVER, you only have 2 wheels man, better safe than sorry... pull the wheel and clean it real well before installing the new tire, fix a flat reeks havoc on spoked wheels as it gets under the tire strip and screw up where the spokes come into the rim (as you are seeing)
Spoke type rear wheels utilize a tire and a tube. You can not successfully plug a tube type tire combination. Change the tube, the tire, and the rim band.
Like others said; you can't plug a tube type tire with the tube in place. If the tread was new I would replace the tube and plug the tire but if the tread is about gone anyway just go the whole nine yards.
I've ridden thousands of miles on plugged tires with no problems other than needing a new balance after plugging.

Spokes look great, but do have disadvantages cleaning and flats. If you did not damage the tire running on it near flat you may be able to salvage it by PATCHING the tire and replacing the tube and strip. Never use a plug on a tube tire. Think of the plug hanging in the tire rubbing on the tube. Think of a big old hemroid, this is not going to make the tube happy. It will create heat from the contact vibration/movement with a blow out as highly probable result. In the end it's your choice, do you value your health and life at the cost of a replacement tire?
Thanks for the response. The plug was just to get the bike off the rim in order to get it to the shop. I ain't riding till it's fixed....I got kids to think about.
