Default Oil Cooler

Forgive me if this has already been posted. I searched and didn't see anything.

I'm planning a long ride this summer...we're going to ride the entire coat of Florida. It's going to be hot and humid so I want to make sure my bike is suited for it. Is an oil cooler all that great? Will it really add years to the life of your engine? If so, which one is better? The HD or Jagg?

Thanks

they both are good . I think the jagg has the edge from what I have researched. Living in florida, more people ride without a cooler than with. May be a good idea to get one, although I doubt you will have any issues without one on your trip.

Lots of threads and opinions on oil coolers on this forum... sure you searched?

I would say probably worth it if you're going to be riding a lot in hot weather. For one trip, probably not worth it. If I got one, I'd get the Jagg.

BTW, Donny Petersen just did a series of articles in American Iron magazine on oil coolers. He's a fan of them, Jagg in particular.

Oil cooler is a good add-on wherever you live. The adapter has a built in thermostat so it only works when it's needed....in other words, it does not increase warm-up time.

I live in Florida and put over 35,000 miles on my brand new 05, no oil cooler, and had no problems. I now have an 07 and I will be putting one on this bike just because I want to. I am going to swim upstream as usual and install a different type of cooler on mine. Some people call it a heat sink but whatever you call it, it's different and I like it.

Donny Peterson knows his ****, too!

I'm going to paint it black and then sand the fin edges off and clear coat it.

I have a Jagg 10 row cooler on order right now. I routinely ride in jammed up city traffic and after 15 min or so, my bike is in heat management. Somehow, I think that cannot be good for engine longevity.

Jagg seems to have the edge in performance, I found an HD on ebay for a great deal. went with the HD, for a few dollars more you can go with the Jagg, but then you also have to buy the adapter piece. Depending on your application(high performance, high compression, cams etc...) I think that the HD works well for everyday applications and will add life to your motor, check into the oil pump too, that is not the stongest link in the Twin Cam chain.

If I remember correctly, Jagg built the HD oil cooler systems. But get at least a 10 row, and yeah the thermostat controlled adapter is a good idea. If you don't like that, get the bypass switch - returns oil to the engine without going through the cooler... a bit cheaper than the thermostat.

... and more important for the late model FI bikes that run a bit hotter than the rest.
