Default Powdercoat removal

Just wondering if anyone removed the powdercoat from the stock cast wheels on a FXD or FXDL?

I know the rough surface needs to be sanded smooth before they go to the chrome shop or polishing, but I was curious if anyone has an easy way to strip the powdercoat first.

I saw a recent post that said Aircraft stripper works well.

use some air craft stripper, rubber gloves and some steel wool... let it sit for a good 45 min, then it should come up wiht a bit of help form the steel wool... after you rinse them you need to really clean it with dentatured alchole, or another cleaning product as such... but that will get it off without needing to blast them... may use a fine wire wheel as well to get in the cracks and nooks

If you have a shop in your area that does soda blasting, that will remove the powder coat without damaging (etching) the metal. It will cost a little more than the aircraft stripper, but it's much quicker and you won't have any mess to clean up. Just another option.

Thanks for your responses. I was looking at the plastic bead/starch (or soda) blasting, and it looks like the most effective and cleanest option. It also means I'll have to down the bike longer than I wanted to.

Chemical stripping would mean I could do it myself, at my leisure, and under my supervision. The downside is I hate Methylene Chloride with a passion. I already have sensitivities to it, and thats all I need to do is make myself sick. all the "environmentally friendly" strippers I looked at were 80% sick, 10% blinding, and 5% eat your skin off. So much for friendly. I wonder what the notsofriendly ones look like.

They sure are. Wish they werent but thats the price I have to pay for being a cheap sob.
I'm one of those "If I cant do it myself, then it really didnt need to be done to begin with"

Did you know a 5 dollar can of barbecue black spray paint is a heck of a lot cheaper than the 3000 bucks the moco wanted for a black powdercoated motor? and if you get a scratch in the paint, touchup is cheap too?
I'm leaving that option open for the wheels too....
